School of Computer and Systems Sciences

Ever since its inception in 1974, this School has been trying to meet the computing needs of different Schools in JNU and offering specially designed courses for their students.

The teaching is specially designed to integrate inputs from statistics, operations research, algebra and combinatories, digital electronics, systems software, artificial intelligence, computer architecture and programming languages. A training and placement cell has beenset up at the School to maintain liason with various government and industrial organizations to facilitate employment for the students.

The various programmes offered in the School of Computer and System Sciences are M.C.A. (6semesters), M.Tech. (3 semesters) and Ph.D. These courses are designed to provide the necessary theoretical background and practical experience in Computer Science and Applications, to meet the growing manpower requirements of the Global Software Industry.

After the completion of the course, the students are fully competent to enter the Global IT- world as well as the fields of Research & Development at prestigious institutions in India and abroad.

The admission to M.Tech programme is based on an All India Examination , conducted by the University at different centres spread all over the country, followed by an extensive interview. On an average 25 students for M.Tech. are selected every year. On an average 30 students for M.C.A. are selected. These students are selected from about 12,000 applicants appearing for the Entrance Examination. This makes the success rate of getting through as tough as I in every 400 applicants. The last semester for M.C.A. course is meant for an Industrial Project, where as, each M.Tech. student has to work in the chosen field under the guidance of a Professor and has to submit a dissertation at the end of the third semester.

The courses in the School are well organized to provide a wide spectrum of choices to the students. The faculty and the students interests include a wide area of Computer’s

School of Arts & Aesthetics

The School of Arts and Aesthetics is one of very few places in India that offer post-graduate degree courses in the theoretical and critical study of visual and performing arts. Moreover, it is the only place in India where performance and visual studies are offered in one integrated programme that allows students to understand a particular art in a broader cultural context.

The study of art has in recent years been enriched by methods and insights from many fields: sociology, linguistics, cultural studies, political science, economic history, semiotics and feminist studies to name a few. It no longer suffices to study a work of art as an ‘object’ in isolation, apart from the social forces that shape it, and social meanings that it creates. The School’s outlook has been formulated in response to new ways of thinking about culture, using a diversity of critical and theoretical approaches.

The School focuses on taught degree programmes. However, the faculty encourages students - and other interested persons - to take advantage of Delhi’s cultural riches by watching and discussing exhibitions, theatre, film and music festivals and organizing field trips. The School also hosts interactions with visiting scholars and artists and runs an annual outreach programme that brings the best scholars in a chosen field from all over India to conduct workshops and give talks that are accessible to the interested public.

Program of Study

MA in Arts and Aesthetics: The school currently offers an MA programme which offers cross-disciplinary study of the visual and performing arts. Students with an undergraduate degree in any discipline (minimum marks 50%) are eligible to appear for the entrance exam. Candidates seeking admission to the course are expected to have a broad knowledge of the history practice and theory of visual and performing arts.

Students will be required to take 64 course credits within the space of four semesters. 16 credits are dedicated to compulsory courses that survey the history of visual and performing arts in India, related aesthetic theory and methodologies for the study of the arts. Students are also obliged to take a language course, and are encouraged to take at least one course in another centre. The remainder of the credits will come from optional courses that offer a more intense focus on particular areas. The stream of specialization will be chosen by the balance of optionals taken (eg four visual and two performance studies). A list of the courses offered over the four semesters is given below. (Prospective students should note that some of the optional courses on offer may depend upon the availability of guest faculty) Syllabus (M.A)

Application forms will be available from the Admissions Branch in the Adminstrative Block, from 15th February to 31st March. The last date for receipt of completed applications is 31st March. The entrance exam will be held in May.

M Phil: The school does not at present offer an M Phil course.

PhD: A small number of direct PhD students may be admitted to the School. Candidates must have a good post graduate degree and must provide evidence of research capabilities through published work in an area related to the intended area of specialization. The direct PhD programme is advertised each year in conjunction with the general admission.
